Changing your dog's diet may seem like a challenge, but with the right approach, the transition to Dry BARF can be simple and beneficial for your furry friend. Below, we'll explain how to make the transition from other types of food (feed, wet food, BARF, etc.) to Dry BARF, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free adaptation.
Transitioning from other foods to Dry BARF
Before starting the transition to Dry BARF, it is essential to assess whether your dog has digestive sensitivities. You should consider whether he has shown digestive problems, such as vomiting or diarrhoea, when consuming anything outside his usual diet. Depending on this, we will follow different approaches to make the dietary change.
IF YOUR DOG IS VERY SENSITIVE
In this case, it is recommended that the dog should eat three feedings a day.
IF YOUR DOG IS A REGULAR FEED USER:
Start by giving him a small amount of Dry BARF in the morning. After two hours, he continued with his regular food. If, after two or three days, his digestion is good, gradually increase the amount of Dry BARF and decrease the amount of dry food.
When he starts to eat full feedings, leave a four-hour gap between Dry BARF and feed so that the digestions are independent.
First, introduce Dry BARF at breakfast and keep the feed for lunch and dinner. If all goes well after two or three days, switch to Dry BARF for breakfast and lunch, leaving the feed for dinner. If the transition is still successful, you can feed your dog entirely on Dry BARF.
IF YOUR DOG EATS NATURAL FOOD:
You can make the transition gradually or introduce Dry BARF straight away. However, always make sure your dog is not sensitive before changing his entire diet. If in doubt, start with one feeding of Dry BARF and keep the rest of his regular food. If your dog eats natural, BARF, cooked, dehydrated or wet food, you can mix Dry BARF with his regular food without having to wait between feedings.
IF YOUR DOG IS NOT VERY SENSITIVE
If your dog consumes feed regularly:
Apply the same gradual approach as described above, but it is not necessary to start with a small amount. Simply start by introducing Dry BARF at breakfast, while keeping the food at other meals.
Never mix Dry BARF with dry food in the same feeding, as the digestions are different and this could cause digestive problems.
Conclusion
Transitioning to Dry BARF, an all-natural, air-dried food, can be a crucial step in improving your dog's quality of life. Whether your dog is sensitive or not, following these steps will help ensure a smooth and safe transition. With Dry BARF, you'll be providing your dog with a balanced, nutrient-rich diet, backed by local ingredients and care in every detail.
