* Ramie is considered an extremely high-quality " bast fiber ", but it is only obtained and processed in insignificant quantities.
It is the stem fiber of a nettle plant native to Asia that can grow up to two meters in height. The fiber is extraordinarily fine, does not need to be bleached because it is naturally snow-white, and can therefore be woven into the finest fabrics, 75-100 g/sqm, such as batiste and voile.
Because of its fiber length and high tear resistance, ramie is sometimes spun with flax to produce exceptionally high-quality linen yarns.
