The most common causes of this inflammation vary according to species, gender, and age. In the case of cats, compared to humans and dogs, cystitis is more common in those under 10 years of age, affecting females and males equally (males being an urgent situation due to the risk of obstruction). The most predisposed feline breeds are domestic shorthairs and Persians. Typically, cats that develop this type of pathology live in a house with no access to the outside, with several cats, are fed a dry diet, and often have a higher-than-ideal body condition.

In young cats, around 75% of cystitis is caused by plugs or stress (idiopathic cystitis), stones account for 20% and only 5% is bacterial. In senior dogs and cats, the main cause of this condition is bacteria.
